The Process of Giving Birth to Reconditioned Crankshafts

The Easiest Process of Crack Detection

One of the best ways of crack detection in cast iron and steel components involves using magnetic particle inspection. The thing to be checked is magnetized temporarily using permanent or electro-magnet. Once this step is completed, powdered iron oxide mixed in the water or kerosene is sprayed on it. In some cases, the inspection staff brushes this solution on the material to be checked.

One thing to ensure before starting the process is that the material to be checked should be cleaned and freed from oil, grease or any dirt.

•    One of the top benefits is that if any crack is persisting there, it is immediately traced.
•    This happens because the magnet attracts the iron particles that are there in the cracks.

The procedure

•    In some cases, it has been observed that the experts dye these particles with bright colors.
•    Another very frequent step is coloring the main component with white color.
•    Among all of the steps taken, perhaps the most robust and effective is using fluorescent color dye. After this, they view the results under ultra-violet light in completely dark surroundings.
•    Experts say that rotating the magnetic field 90 degrees allows cracks to get easily visible. They say that this is also a very influential step that generates really effective results. The lines of the magnetic force cross the cracks at such an angle that it exposes them clearly.

DE-MAGETIZATION

Once the main motive, i.e. crack detection is achieved, it is important to de-magnetize the product and this becomes even more important if the product is bearing journal or thrust collar.

The reason why demagnetization is considered so important is because the attracted particles, if left there can cause faster wear and tear or damage to the internal parts.
