The Process of Giving Birth to Reconditioned Crankshafts

Many people get reconditioned crankshafts in their vehicles but have no idea of what is actually involved in the process. To help them out and to make them aware of the entire process, here is the post. The very first process is given the name of grinding.

Crankshaft grinding

•    In the process, this machine is actually precisely machined to the first available undersized.
•    The reason behind doing this is ensuring that exact tolerances are achieved every time, this process is repeated.
•    Secondly, in the process of grinding, oil holes are chamfered with the goal of improving lubrication to the journal surface before it is passed to another process called MICRO-POLISHING.
•    To ensure that reconditioned crankshaft is in its best possible condition, the oil gallery areas are thoroughly cleaned.
•    Each and every contaminant prevailing there is removed to make it easy for the QC and assembly team.

The process of micro-polishing

•    Once the first phase of bringing reconditioned crankshafts is completed and it has been cleaned by hot tanking, it is sent for micro-polishing.
•    The team ensures that all industry norms, laws, regulations, and standards are followed as they go through the process.
•    This is very important because according to the experts, only a well-polished piece would help in removing all other imperfections prevailing in the journal.

The step of crankshaft welding

•    If the crankshaft faces any kind of damage in the process of grinding, polishing or any other; the experts have to bring this process into an application. In this process, they weld it back to the exact size so that the process of grinding can be resumed.
•    In most cases, it is found that this service is required when the engine has been used for a long time without the oil or the oil ran dry.

Oil hole chamfering

The last phase of the process of preparing reconditioned crankshafts includes oil holes chamfering.

This is done with two goals in mind and the one is eliminating sharp edges. The second goal is to ensure that the oil is distributed evenly on the crankshaft journals.
